Pieni Apu On Suuri: 2012

Tiistaina jatkoimme pojan palovamman hoitoa. Hän oli tosi reipas ja sovimme, että kun haavoja puhdistetaan ja jos sattuu, hän puristaa Sannan kättä. Muutama puristus tuli, mutta kuulemma ei sattunut paljoa. Anna viihdytti poikaa laskemalla hänen kanssa englanniksi sataan, poika opetti vaihtokauppana meitä laskemaan swahiliksi sataan... Anna heitteli läpsyjä pikkumiehen kanssa. Vaihdoimme Elasto-gelit, pesimme tekstiilit ja laitoimme uudet tilalle. Sovimme seuraavan käynnin torstaille.

On Tuesday we continued treatments with the boy. He was in good spirits and we agreed that if he felt pain during cleaning, he would squeeze Sanna’s hand. He squeezed a few times but maintained that it did not hurt so much. Anna entertained the boy by counting to a hundred in English with him and the boy taught us to count to a hundred in Swahili. Anna also high fived with the boy. We changed his Elasto-Gel, washed his garments and replaced them with new ones. We agreed to see him again on Thursday.

Torstaina jatkoimme hoitoa. Me olimme täysin äimistyneitä siitä, miten hyvin haavat olivat lähteneet pienentymään ja arpialue oli myös pienentynyt huomattavasti. Poika oli iloisella mielellä! Pojan äiti kertoi, että poika on nukkunut kaksi yötä putkeen ensimmäistä kertaa onnettomuuden jälkeen, koska kivut ovat vähentyneet huomattavasti. Pikkumies pystyy nyt jo liikuttamaan päätään ja koukistamaan kyynärniveltään. Yleinen fiilis oli tosi iloinen!

Fysioterapeutti Flaviana teki nyt apuna koko homman, hän seurasi tarkasti mitä tehdään ja perjantaina hän saa hoitaa koko homman itse! Luotto on korkealla, koska Flaviana kyllä tietää tarkalleen mitä tehdään ja miksi.

On Thursday we continued the treatment. We were amazed how much the wounds and scars have decreased in size. Boy was very happy! The mother told us that he has slept two whole nights since the accident due to lesser pain. He was able to move his head and bend his elbow. The joy we all felt!

Flaviana watched like a hawk and come Friday, she will have to do all this by herself! We have no worries because she knows exactly what to do and why.

Haikea viimeinen hoitokerta perjantaina... Poika oli keksinyt itse hauskan jekun meille - menimme Flavianan huoneeseen ja hän istui pöytänsä takana. Yhtäkkiä heppu hyppäsi oven takaa ja säikäytti meidät! Nauru raikasi kovasti ja kaveri oli tosi mielissään kun oli keksinyt niin hauskan jutun. Poika hyppäsi reippaasti hoitopöydälle ja Flaviana aloitti haavojen puhdistuksen. Nyt poika puristi Sannan kättä paljon enemmän, koska ihotunto alkaa palautua reiteen ja puhdistaminen sattui. Haavat alkoivat näyttää jo yllättävän hyviltä ja arpialue oli edelleenkin pienentynyt. Osa paksuista arvista oli jo alkanut hiukan pehmentyä.

Vaihdoimme Elasto-gelit ja painetekstiilit. Opetimme Flavianan huuhtelemaan Elasto-gelit - tähän mennessä ne ovat olleet niin likaisia, repeytyneitä ja eritteisiä ettei niitä ole voinut huuhdella. Flaviana teki kaiken itse ja me olimme assistentteina. Flaviana oli tosi ammattimainen otteissaan, joten meillä ei jatkossa ole huolen häivää pojan hoidon suhteen. Flaviana on luvannut lähettää meille kuvia, ja muutenkin tulemme olemaan yhteydessä. Hän ottaa yhteyttä jos tulee kysymyksiä, ja muutenkin tulemme varmasti vaihtamaan kuulumisia.

Oli tosi haikeaa erota pojasta. Annoimme hänelle mukaan yhteiskuvan meistä, johon kirjoitimme, että oli mukavaa tavata hänet ja päästä hoitamaan häntä, toivotimme pikaista paranemista ja Jumalan siunausta hänelle ja koko perheelle. Tämä siunaamisen toivottaminen on paikallinen tapa, joka tuntui meistä hiukan vieraalta, mutta maassa maan tavalla... Halasimme pojan kanssa oikein kovasti.

Flaviana sanoi, että hänen tulee meitä kova ikävä ja siinä sitten halailtiin liikuttuneina puolin ja toisin. Dr Materu (sairaalan ylilääkäri) kiitteli meitä kovasti ja sanoi, että kaksi enkeliä lähetettiin hoitamaan pientä poikaa. Sairaalassa ajatellaan, että pojan elämällä on jokin suuri tarkoitus, koska hänen nimensä tarkoittaa Jumalan lahjaa, hän selvisi hengissä noin suuresta palovammasta ja sai suomalaisen palovammahoidon. Dr Materu jo kyseli, koska tulemme seuraavan kerran ja sanoi, että me olemme aina tervetulleita takaisin. Me todella toivomme sitä myös!

Automatka takasin talolle oli aika hiljainen. Eron hetki oli haikea.

Bittersweet Friday. The boy had decided to prank us – we went to Flaviana’s office and she was sitting behind her desk. Suddenly the boy jumped behind the door and scared us all! It was followed by immediate laughter and he was so proud to have been able to prank us himself. He hopped on the table and Flaviana started to clean his wounds. Now the boy squeezed Sanna’s hand a lot more – the skin sensation was starting to come back and cleaning the thigh hurt. The wounds looked surprisingly good and the scar area had continued to minimize. Some of the thick scars had started to soften a bit.

We changed the Elasto-Gel and the pressure garments. We taught Flaviana to rinse the Elasto-Gel – so far they have been so torn, dirty and full of excretions that they could not be used again. Flaviana executed and we merely helped. She was a real professional; we have no care in the world about this boy’s treatment. Flaviana promised to send us pictures and stay in touch. She will contact us if questions arise.

Parting with the boy was very hard. We gave him a picture of all of us to which we wrote that meeting and treating him was our pleasure! We also wrote him a speedy recovery and may God bless him and his family. The blessing is a local custom which felt a bit strange to us but when in Rome.. We gave him a great big hug.

Flaviana said that she will miss us and that’s when the emotions and cuddles kicked in. Dr.Materu (chief senior physician) was grateful and told us that two angels were sent to treat the boy. The hospital now thinks that the boy’s life has a greater purpose because his name literally means “a gift from God”; he survived a large burn and was treated the Finnish way. Dr.Materu even asked when we will return and said that we are always welcome. We really hope so!

The drive home was a bit quiet; the separation took its toll on us.
