Kiboshon sairaala keräsi lahjoitusvaroja, joiden turvin poika lähetettiin plastiikkakirurgiaan Singidan kaupukiin noin 500 kilometrin päähän. Sinne saatiin plastiikkakirurgit operoimaan hänet. Koko matkamme ajan olemme odottaneet poikaa, jotta painehoito saataisiin aloitettua mahdollisimman pian.
The long
awaited burn victim arrived to Kibosho on Monday. An 8-year old boy fell into
the bonfire last spring and suffered 50% burns. Regardless of physiotherapy and
treatment he had developed contractures to elbow and from chin to chest. He has
not been able to straighten his arms or lifted his chin for eight months. To
our understanding pain relief is not used here the same way as at home so we
can only imagine how painful the life of this little man has been.
Kibosho
hospital raised donations to send the boy 500 kilometers away to Singida city
to receive plastic surgery. They managed to get a plastic surgeon to operate on
him. We have waited for the boy all along to start the pressure treatment as
soon as possible.

On Monday
we started treatment with Elasto-Gel and interim care garments. Skin grafts were taken from the boy’s thighs
leaving the right thigh somewhat ok and the left a bit mangled. Luckily we had
a wide selection of pressure garments so we were able to find both an interim
care and a pressure garment in the right size. Flaviana was immediately there
to help us and learn in practice.
The boy was
incredibly brave! He was initially scared of course until we explained that
this will not hurt at all. He told us that the Elasto-Gel felt wonderfully cool
and he had no pain – yes! The mother was guided on how to use the pressure
garment even though we agreed that while we are here we will wash his burns.
Finally the
boy even smiled and high fived us! Two very happy physiotherapists were
grinning the whole way home. Sanna even cried a few happy tears.
