Hiv on täällä hyvin yleinen sairaus. Koska suurin osa sairaaloista on katolisten johtamia, meitä kiinnosti erityisesti suhtautuminen kondomin käyttöön. Hiv-lääkitys on ilmainen.
We have discussed the care practices of burns with the physiotherapists. All burns are treated when wound is open. Inflammation is prevented by liquid Vaseline. Honey is also being used – though not the medical kind as we do. Burns are washed daily. The burn is treated with a powdery medicine – which shall remain unnamed since the English the locals use is sometimes very hard to follow. Iodine is also used in treatment. The general belief is that if the burn is covered it will generate more keloids and contracture. Seems that we have a lot of work to do and we’re off to a good start!
The
physiotherapist immediately starts the physiotherapy to prevent contractures
and maintain the movement of the joints. Skin graft operations are rare and
highly expensive.
HIV is very
common here. Since most of the hospitals are run by Catholics we were intrigued
about their opinion on condoms. Each of the diagnosed patients was immediately
sent to a guidance counselor to learn how HIV spreads. Mothers are guided not
to infect their babies. Condoms are given in some hospitals although they are
very cheap to buy as well. One package of ten costs a thousand shillings (0,50
Euros). The use of condoms is highly recommended and the medicines to treat HIV
are free. Medicine for malaria and tuberculosis are free, to boot. Usually HIV
patients come to a hospital far from their home to remain unrecognized.
It’s very hard to estimate the amount of HIV positives since the people do not know enough of the symptoms and how not to get it. The situation is especially bad in the villages because they do not attend school. They arrive to the hospitals when the situation has progressed into AIDS. For the same reason the cancer and tumor education is very problematic, hospitals are the last straw. The government has begun to educate the nation via radio and TV-campaigns to share the information on cancer, tumors and HIV. Educational classes are also given to students during school.
